AMAZING TRICKS/TIPS FROM MAKE UP ARTIST TARA SALL

unnamed

I'm sure most of you know we just wrapped the BMS movie in Wilmington. We had the absolute best time and met some of the most amazing people. All the hair and makeup people were extraordinary. Heather Partain, Christina Maher and Tara Sall were on make up and Kari Delaney, Julie Delaney, Priscilla Green and Joyce Gilliard  were on hair, All fantastic!

As usual, I picked Tara's brain for some secret tips and here is what she told me. I also of course went out and purchased every product she used to create my look as Julia King in the film. (Coming in next post so stay tuned!

ALWAYS USE A MAKEUP BRUSH TO FIX MISTAKES, NOT A Q-TIP!

Dip the brush in makeup remover and it will give you a completely controlled, straight line to easily remove exactly what you want and nothing else. I usually use a MAC 212 for this but also love a large angled synthetic brush from The Body Shop for that purpose. This makes cat eyes a breeze.

DARK LIPS

Use a silicone primer around the lip line before using dark/bright lip colors and liner to prevent them from bleeding. EVERY time  (currently using MAC Matte texture, but anything with that silicone consistency will work)

HIGHLIGHT

Just using a pressed powder that matches the complexion is always a great eye/ under brow highlight, and can be a good texture to blend your other shadows into as it can be used all over the face if you are doing a look that is very blown out (drawing the color/shading out in the direction of the temples, etc) and needs blending-into.

MORE COVERAGE WITHOUT A FOUNDATION

Mix a dab of concealer or color corrector in with BB creams to make them have more foundation-like coverage or cc quality.

BROWS

Mix a loose pigment that matches your hair color (or whatever color you want your brows to be) into a clear brow gel for a perfect match. For example, I used to mix clear Brow gel from MAC with Burnt Burgundy pigment to match my hair

ALWAYS USE A SUNSCREEN!

Neutrogena Ulta Sheer Liquid sunblock is the BEST weightless SPF to layer underneath makeup and does not change the way anything else lays on your skin.

HOW TO MAKE EYES POP WHEN SHORT ON TIME.

Use one highlight colored shadow (something with a satin like finish works best) diffused only on the center of the lid and strategically placing it lightly under the brow and inner corner will provide the illusion that you are wearing more than 1 shade of eyeshadow if you are in a hurry.

BEST LIP BALM

CO Bigelow  is my Favorite lip balm!! The one in the squeeze tube original formula is identical to MAC lip conditioner in the tube. It has the exact ingredients and will save you lots of money.

MAKE YOUR GELS AND PAINTS LAST LONGER

Store glass jars with screw tops (mac fluidlines, paint pots, stila smudge pots, etc) upside down. I have had fluid lines that I  stored this way and they are still fresh several years later...

COLOR TRICKS

Shade eye colors with burgundy instead of black or dark brown. This brings a really unique depth to whatever color you are using, whether it's natural or a bright pop color.

USE OIL TO TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF

Use  CLEANSING OIL for removing your makeup by emulsifying it so it easily slips off your face. I will never do it any other way and it makes such a huge difference. You won't ever have to rub your eyes hard to get that makeup off again! I have used MAC Cleanse Off Oil, Body Shop cleansing oil, Dermalogica Pre Cleanse* (*favorite), DHC Cleansing Oil, Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Oil, Philosophy Purity made simple oil, they all slightly vary in consistency and formula to suit different skin types.
